Sam Smith is first Brit male solo artist to record James Bond theme song after 50 years

MUMBAI: Following in the footsteps of another Brit singer, Adele, multi Grammy winner Sam Smith has been roped in to sing the theme song for the 24th James Bond film- ‘Spectre’. This makes Smith the first British male solo artist to record a James Bond theme song, after 50 years.

The last British male artist to sing the theme song for the popular film franchise was Welsh singer Tom Jones in 1965, which had a background score composed by John Barry. Barry and Leslie Bricusse co-wrote the theme song.

Smith and Jimmy Napes have co-written the upcoming film’s theme track, titled ‘Writing's on the Wall’. It will be released under Capitol Records and will be made available across all platforms on 25 September.

The news was confirmed by Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment on 8 September.

Commenting on the track, the ‘Stay With Me’ singer said, "This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."

Smith's debut album ‘In the Lonely Hour’ swept up multiple awards including four Grammys, Brit and AMA awards. The multi- platinum selling artist topped the UK charts when the album was first launched, and has since, earned five number one UK singles.

Producers of ‘Spectre’, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, "Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for Spectre and with Sam's extraordinary vocal performance, 'Writing's on the Wall' will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time."

Smith hinted about his association with the film a few hours before the official announcement was made.
