The most controversial moments from the past VMAs

MUMBAI: Every year you tune into the MTV Video and Music Awards (VMAs) for the performances, or to see which of your favourite artists takes home a Moonman, but honestly it's the unscripted, outrageous, and completely inappropriate moments that really get people talking about the VMAs.

Since the Video Music Awards began, there's been no shortage of these, thanks to artists like Madonna, Kanye West and Michael Jackson, so ahead of the 2017 awards scheduled for 27 August 2017, let us take a look back at some of the most controversial VMA moments of all time.

Miley Cyrus and her twerking

The Internet went bonkers after Miley Cyrus twerked, grinded and licked everything on the 2013 MTV VMAs stage. People almost forgot that Robin Thicke was even there for that one.

The Britney Madonna-Christina Kiss

Madonna has been shocking VMA viewers for decades, starting with rolling around in a wedding dress singing like a Virgin. But nothing created a bigger scandal than her girl on girl kisses with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift

We'll never know how the course of Taylor Swift's brilliant career shifted because of a hot tempered Kanye West snatching her mic amid her Best Female Video acceptance speech with his Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time before stalking off.

Lady Gaga wore a meat dress at the 2010 VMAS

Lady Gaga accepted the Video of the Year award for Bad Romance wearing a dress made of raw beef and said "I am not a piece of meat." When she picked up her Moonman award, she handed her jewel-encrusted meat purse to presenter Cher.

Diana Ross meets Lil Kim’s cleavage

Diana Ross just couldn't believe that Lil Kim showed up to the 1999 VMAs wearing pasties, so when she got on stage to help present the Best Hip Hop Video award, she lifted up Kim's arm and jiggled her boob for the camera.

Nicki Minaj calls out Miley Cyrus at the 2015 VMAS

During acceptance speech for hip-hop video of the year, Nicki Minaj confronted host Miley Cyrus for comments she made about the rapper in The New York Times. Minaj referred to Cyrus as this expletive that had a lot of stuff to say about me in the press. Cyrus seemed stunned, but congratulated Minaj on the win and said her New York Times quotes were manipulated.

The Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley kiss

One of the most uncomfortable moments in VMA history happened in 1994 when Michael Jackson took the stage with his then wife Lisa Marie Presley and shared an awkward kiss. Even at the time, the on stage kiss between the King of Pop and his then-bride seemed more like a dare than a real-life romance.

Fiona Apple calling out the industry for their Bulls-t

When Fiona went on to VMA stage and to give her acceptance speech in 1997, she stunned the crowd by giving a big middle finger to the entire music industry. Her words that people may still remember, “Everybody that's watching this world this world is bullsh-t and you shouldn't model your life about what you think that we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying. Go with yourself.”
