Are controversies good for singers?

MUMBAI: They make music, but sometimes, with their actions, they have to face the music as well.

Singers are humans too, we know. Have a look at a few who stepped out of tune on a few occasions. Was the publicity worth the effort, intended or otherwise? You decide.

Mika Singh

Whenever Rakhi Sawant is on screen, Mika Singh’s controversial kiss act is what comes to our mind. According to oft repeated media clips, Mika Singh kissed Rakhi Sawant during his own birthday party without her consent in the year 2006. The actress turned ballistic. The controversy resulted into drama on a huge scale. Later, Rakhi filed a molestation case against the singer.

Other additions to Mika’s controversial acts are the hit and run case, that supposedly took place in 2014 when the singer allegedly knocked down an auto rickshaw causing serious injuries to the passengers.

Mika also has the dubious honour of having slapped a doctor during a concert in South Delhi. Subsequently, an F.I.R was lodged against him.

Yo Yo Honey Singh

Regardless of big achievements in the musical sphere, Honey Singh has always been a topic of controversial storm.  The Punjabi rapper was accused of making vulgar songs even before his entry into Bollywood. In 2013, Honey Singh came up with a track having allegedly ‘sickening’ lyrics that ultimately landed him in the court.

Reports say that Honey Singh checked into rehab for drug abuse, making him completely vanish from Bollywood for almost two years. The adoring public, ever willing to forgive and forget, has embraced Yo Yo with ardor once again.

Ankit Tiwari

Another singer who made it to the list is Ankit Tiwari. In May 2014, Tiwari was arrested on rape charges made by his girlfriend. An F.I.R was also filed against his brother for threatening the girl.

Sources say that the singer met the 28-year old through a common friend and promised her marriage soon. However, the case was settled last year - in January 2015. Last heard, Ankit is still single and willing to mingle.

Sonu Nigam

Sonu recently hogged limelight with his mid-flight concert where he used the public announcement system for singing songs on passengers demand. The controversy led to the suspension of five crew attendants of the particular flight.

This is not the first time when the singer has landed  in a controversial frame. Much earlier in 2013 Sonu refused to sign a singing contract with Shekhar Suman’s ‘Heartless’ that again involved him in a controversy. He also spoke out against a film journalist for  allegedly ‘trashing’ his image in print. Nigam is known to be blunt with his views and opinions. That doesn’t deter from his popularity, nevertheless.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya

The singer shocked everybody with his tweet on 6 May 2015 when the sessions court in Mumbai sentenced Salman Khan to five years in jail in connection with the hit-and-run case. Abhijeet tweeted in support of Salman, “Roads are meant for cars and dogs not for people sleeping on them".

Animal activists raged against the singer for his insensitive comments. A police complaint was also filed against him alleging that manhandles and abuses stray dogs. However, he completely denied the allegations.
