Celeb Splitsville: Couples who called it quits

MUMBAI: We often say, ‘Marriages are made in Heaven and are consummated on Earth’. We cannot foretell whom we are going to marry until and unless we get a medium to find our soul mate. Some marriages are fully-fledged family affairs while some happen when love happens.

It is not a certainty that marriages will work for the couple’s entire lives. Both are responsible for the maintaining the relationship.  But, there are times when things go beyond repair.

Given below is a list of celebrity marriages that couldn’t last forever.

Farhan Akhtar

A recent shock to the industry was the news about the Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Akhtar separation. The ‘Rock On’ singer, whose love story was not less than a fairy tale and an inspiration to other couples, has unfortunately ended. Farhan, 42, and Adhuna, 48 dated for three years before tying the knot. The couple called it off after 15 years of their marriage. They have two daughters, Shakya and Akira.

Kanika Kapoor

The singer who rose to fame from the song, ‘Baby Doll’ married UK based husband Raj Chandak at the age of 18 in 1997. The marriage did not last long and the couple got divorced in 2012. The couple has three children from the marriage and they are still on friendly terms with each other.

Javed Akhtar

One of the most successful lyricists of Bollywood, Javed Akhtar, was married to Honey Irani, maternal aunt of choreographer and director Farha Khan and director/host Sajid Khan. Actor-director- singer Farhan Akhtar and director Zoya Akhtar were born out of this wedlock. The Padma Shri award winner spilt up with Honey Irani and later married actress Shabana Azmi.

Adnan Sami

The Mumbai based singer Adnan Sami who recently became an Indian citizen, married for the third time in 2010. Adnan, 42, first married actress Zeba Bakhtiar in 1993 with whom he has a son. They got divorced after three years of their marriage. Sami then went on to marry Dubai based Arab Sabah Galadari in 2001. This relationship too ended up in a divorce.

Asha Bhosle

The prominent Indian singer Asha Bhosle best known for her playback singing in Hindi cinema married 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle at the age of 16. However after three children and some ill-treatment from her in-laws, the diva filed for divorce in 1960. Later Bhosle went on to marry R.D Burman, the legendary music composer in 1980.

R.D Burman

The Indian score composer and one of the most seminal music directors of Indian films, Rahul Dev Burman was not on his first marriage  when he wed Asha Bhonsle. Burman was married to Rita Patel for five years before Bhosle came into his life.

Sunidhi Chauhan

A well-established play back singer, Sunidhi Chauhan also went through a topsy-turvy track. Sunidhi, 32, at the age of 18 married director- choreographer Bobby Khan after working on a music video with him. The marriage was a private affair with Chauhan being happy, initially. However, the couple separated after one year due to family issues.

Chauhan later got involved in a romantic relationship with music composer Hitesh Sonik. The duo tied the knot on 24 April, 2012.

Kishore Kumar

Even the icon wasn’t lucky in terms of love. Lady luck came four times in Kumar’s life.

Kumar’s first wife was Ruma Ghosh and their marriage lasted eight years.

His second wife was beauty queen, actress Madhubala whom he proposed to when she was sick and suffering from heart disease. Kumar even converted to Islam to marry Madhubala and reportedly changed his name to Karim Abdul. Their marriage ended with Madhubala’s death in 1969.

Kumar's third marriage was with Yogeeta Bali and it lasted from 1976 to 1978.

Kishore was married to Leena Chandavarkar from 1980 until his death in 1987.

He had two sons, Amit Kumar with Ruma and Sumit Kumar with Leena Chandavarkar.
