Rohan Sippy is known to have an eclectic taste when it comes to his movies soundtracks, and his next feature, Nautanki Saala is no different with sounds ranging from romance, fun to staple remix of popular oldies slated to release on 12 April. Ayushmann Khurrana, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Pooja Salvi and Evelyn Sharma are starring in the film. Khurrana has rendered two tracks in the film, while the album consists of eight original songs along with reprised, unplugged and remix versions.

We start with romantic soundtrack ‘Mera Mann Kehne Laga’ which is a sole work of Pakistani singer Shabir. He wore the cap of composer, lyricist and vocalist for the track; the first track in the playlist is romantic track describing in-depth feeling of his or her lover. The music used is melodious and delightful. The reprise version targets the niche audience but it’s an innovative idea to get audience to listen to the track who didn’t enjoy the original version. Lyrics are the strength of ‘Mera Mann Kehne Laga’. Kumar’s version is also beautiful specially the part where her vocal is backed with an echo that sounds marvelous and adds the emotion needed for the track.

Khurrana and Mohan sound compelling and dreamy in a song which is soulful, pleasing and catchy. The song ‘Saddi Galli Aaja’  penned by Khurrana, Kohli and Saini  has three versions (Original, Unplugged and Remix). You will witness the efforts by Khurrana to make this track as smooth as possible as he gives high pitch to it, but time will tell the popularity this track will achieve.

Sensuous track ‘Dhak Dhak’ of 1992 film Beta is revived in the film and Azad has rendered the track in a way to display naughtiness, seductiveness and humour . Azad’s role completes when Sagar, Carvalo, Sawant and Soans give the back vocals.

Romantic song ‘Tu Hi Tu’ rendered by Khurrana gets you to imagine violin playing around you. It is so McCleary signature style of using strings and trumpet. Lyrically, Munir has delivered romantic words that sharply point a side of a lover. And the sorrow in the track is added by Khurrana.

Munir has built the base of ‘Sapna Mera Toota’ a soulful track and singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has conveyed words in his magical voice. Rashid Khan’s play with flutes, drum, and guitar; later the qawwali touch by Sabri and English vocals by  Dmello just does the magic desirably well.

Followed by two beautiful and soulful lyrics, Munir pens naughty lyrics for ‘Dil Ki to Lag Gayi’. The duo McCleary-Azad collaborate again for this naughty number.  It takes me back to black and white era due to its slow music but picks up pace gradually.

The next in the album is famous Laxmikant-Pyarelal's track from Tezaab, ‘So Gaya Yeh Jahaan’ with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The track is a part of retro-part techno number with Nitin Mukesh’s voice imparting it a strange sense of solitude, but the song feels a little distant at times.

Overall, the album is appealing with a mix of many flavors. Most of the tracks are based to match the genre of the film – romantic comedy. It’s a pack of comedy, melody and wonderful lyrics. At a time when all the earthy and inappropriate lyrics have surrounded the Indian film music, Natuanki Saala songs with some meaningful lyrics can bring afresh feel to one’s ear.
