The most awaited concert among musicians and music lovers alike saw some of the most awe-inspiring musicians from India and across the globe play for the ninth barsi' of Ustad Allarakha Khan on 3 February, 2009 in Mumbai. In this year's edition of the Homage To Abbaji concert, son Zakir Hussain offered Mumbai a rare chance to witness magic of some awe-inspiring musicians this included tabla players of varied gharana's who demonstrated the flavor of their respective regions and styles. The concert was organized by Reliance and Brooke Bond in association with Ustad Allarakha Institute of Music. The day long concert had the music lovers glued to their seats at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium, Sion. Afterall, it's not everyday that you get to see a concert that features musicians like Charles Lloyd, Eric Harland, Zakir Hussain and many others play together. The tribute concert was divided into three sessions. 'Taal pranam' was opened by flautist Rakesh Chaurasia. This was followed by performance by Jazz drummer Ranjit Barot and students of Ustad Allarakha Institute of Music. The morning session was concluded by performance by sitar exponent Niladri Kumar. The afternoon session called 'Taal Tapasya' featured solo performances by Vikku Vinayakram (ghatam), Puran Maharaj(Tabla) and Taufiq Quereshi( Djembes). If the day's session saw fewer seats at the auditorium, which were primarily occupied by musicians in the audience, the evening concert was – a packed house! The evening session 'Celebrate Abbaji' was started by performances by Dhaak players from West Bengal, while the marquee performance 'Sangam' featured Jazz great Charles Lloyd, Eric Harland, Zakir Hussain and guest performance by Louis Banks and Shankar Mahadevan. |
