Zubin Mehta concerts in Mumbai to mark Mehli Mehta centenary

MUMBAI: Five of the most luminous names in music - conductor Zubin Mehta, tenor Placido Domingo, conductor-pianist Daniel Barenboim, violinist Pinchas Zukerman and soprano Barbara Frittoli will perform in Mumbai in a special series to mark the centenary of Zubin's father, Mehli Mehta, in October this year.

Four concerts will be held at the Jamshed Bhabha Opera House, the Domingo-Frittoli show will be at the Brabourne Stadium, offering some of the most well-loved arias and duets. The series of concerts will begin on 7 October with Barenboim and be followed by two Zukerman nights. Organised by the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, it has taken three years of assiduous work to assemble this star cast.

The city has earlier witnessed artistes like Arthur Rubinstein, Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich and Daniel Barenboim who came here with the English Chamber Orchestra and conducted from the piano, but this is the first time a galaxy of internatinal artistes will be coming together to India for an event of this scale.

The Mehli Mehta Music Foundation was established in 1995 as a not for profit Organization to promote western classical music and to honour Mehli Mehta, who was in the 1930s and 1940s the motivating force behind the Bombay String Quartet, the Bombay Symphony Orchestra and westernclassical music in the city.

The Foundation's goal is to foster a greater knowledge, understanding and appreciation of western classical music in Mumbai.
