We are not interested in Bollywood: Midhaven

Founded last year (2012) by Karan Seven Paul (guitarist and lead vocals), Shreyas Rane (lead guitarist), Abhishek Sawant (Bass Guitar) and Aviraj Kumar (Drums)- Midhaven has put its metal to the pedal already writing 10 original material, performing at gigs and releasing an EP. The band is not afraid to draw inspiration and emotion from personal tragedies (death of a brother) nor do they have any intention of playing anything less than bludgeoning rock.

The new progressive metal band hailing from Mumbai, has band members at just 18-19. Extremely talented and committed, the boys share a common passion for ‘Slayer’.  Each member has a different genre as their background, including thrash metal, progressive metal, classical, flamenco, grunge, hard rock amongst others. Radioandmusic.com caught up with the band and just had enough time for a quick tete-a-tete with Paul before he plugged his six strings for the fans.

Excerpts:

As a prog-metal band what kind of audience is into your music?

The audience that has been attracted to our sound is generally between the ages of 15 to 30. Metal fans, Hard Rock Fans and even a number of people who listen to commercial music.

Where do you get your angst and inspiration from?

Each member of Midhaven has a different genre as their background including thrash metal, classical and flamenco, progressive metal, black metal, etc. Midhaven is basically a mash up of all these genres with hints of classical through out our full length album.

My inspiration is straight up from death and dreaming, the pain and sorrow I went through when I lost my brother. The entire album revolves around freeing the soul of a loved one

Musically, your influences are mainly from 90s’ bands and later acts.

Yes. All of us grew up and are still growing up on classic rock. It’s just that classic rock isn't the main inspiration in our music. The bands we follow now include some of the biggest metal acts the world has seen and underground artists who haven't made in the metal industry yet.

An example to a band that has influenced us deeply is Black Sabbath.

What kind of support system are there for upcoming bands like Midhaven in terms of platform to perform, gear, chance to record etc.

There a limitless number of college festivals, small venues that pay decently, band competitions such as HornBill that give out 10 lakh as prize money, etc.

Joshua Inc studios had a competition last year, where they let a band record a few songs for free. Many metal blogs write about bands such as us, to promote them as well such as Metal Wani, Metalbase India and MetalIndia Magazine.

In an industry dominated by Bollywood music - are you guys open to doing tracks for a mainstream Hindi film?

Not at all.  Midhaven is strictly original music and promotes only Metal artists.

Where do you see yourselves and indie music of India five years from now?

We see Midhaven gradually growing at the moment and five years down the road we'd probably be around finishing our second full length album, touring etc.
