Veteran tabla player Chandrakant Kamat bids adieu

MUMBAI: Veteran tabla player Pandit Chandrakant Shantaram Kamat passed away following heart failure at his Pune residence on 28 June 2010  He was 76.

According to reports, Kamat returned from his routine morning walk sessions after which he suffered a heart attack  

Born on 26 November 1933 at Dhulia, Kamat would often travel with his singer-actor father Shantaram Kamat and act for Sangeet Natak companies. Interestingly, he had learnt to play the tabla from the drama troupes 

Kamat remained a preferred choice for many top musicians like Mogubai Kurdikar, Hirabai Badodekar, Bal Gandharva, Mallikarjun Mansoor, Kumar Gandharva, Kishori Amonkar, Prabha Atre, Jitendra Abhisheki and Firoz Dastur 

In addition, Kamat also holds the record of performing at the Sawai Gandharva festival for fifty consecutive years. Kamat is survived by two sons — tabla players Bharat and Subhash Kamat
