Van Halen closes Rock USA fest

MUMBAI: Rock legend Van Halen closed the 3rd Rock USA Festival with a thunderous show and treated 41,000 fans to their hits from their classic era and latest ‘A Different Kind Of Truth’ album.

The band’s flamboyant frontman David Lee Roth, guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and new bassist Wolfgang Van Halen (who replaced original bassist Michael Anthony) gave the audience what they wanted and more playing old hits like ‘Panama’, ‘ Hot For Teacher’, ‘You Really Got Me’ and new ones like ‘She’s The Woman’, ‘Tattoo’ and ‘China Town’. The band encored with ‘Jump’.

The show also had the mandatory DRUM SOLO BY Alex Van Halen and guitar solo complete with tapping and fret wizardry from Eddie Van Halen.

Roth’s singing and banter was on all night and the Van Halen’s just never seem to miss. Both the sound and the music were solid. Camaraderie among the band also seemed well, especially Roth and Eddie, who interacted more than anybody else onstage. Of course Roth wasn’t kicking above his head or doing the splits like the old days, but his personality is still that of a 20-year-old. Musically, the band was tight, poised and frankly, just looked and acted like legends, report said.

Other major acts that performed at the four-day festival included Avenged Sevenfold, Twisted Sister, Godsmack, Saliva, Anthrax, Great White, Queensryche, Chevelle and Ratt.
