MUMBAI: Universal Music Group has appointed Joseph Schmidt as the chief financial officer of its east coast labels.

The announcement was made by UMG’s east coast labels COO Ivan Gavin, whom Schmidt will report to. In his new role, Schmidt will oversee financial functions, including planning, forecasting, reporting and deal analysis along with the marketing administration. He will also manage the finance staff of Island Def Jam and Universal Republic.

Commenting on the appointment Gavin said, “Joe Schmidt is a consummate professional who possesses the financial skills necessary to expertly navigate today’s rapidly changing marketplace. And as we continue to expand the East Coast Labels, he is the ideal executive to oversee both Island Def Jam and Universal Republic finance staff.”

Schmidt said, “It’s great to be joining UMG’s East Coast Labels at such an exciting time, while we are repositioning the group to maximize all opportunities on both the creative and financial sides of the business. Rarely do you have the kind of creative and business leadership that the east coast labels enjoy. I am happy to be a part of it and look forward to contributing.”

Prior to this appointment, Schmidt served as VP finance for RCA Records. With over 15 years of experience, Schmidt has also worked at Sony Music Entertainment and Sony BMG Entertainment in number of key finance positions.
