UK varsity confers doctorate on Dr L Subramaniam

MUMBAI: Ace violinist Dr L Subramaniam has been conferred a Honorary Doctorate in Music by the University of Sheffield in the UK. The ceremony was presided over by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Geoff Tomlinson.

Dr Subramaniam is the only musician who has performed/recorded Karnatic Classical Music, eastern Classical Music, both Orchestral and non-Orchestral, and also composed for and conducted major Orchestras, collaborated with a wide range of some of the greatest musicians, from different genres of music including jazz, occidental, jugalbandis with North Indian musicians, world music and global fusion.

'Visions of India- a blend of different music traditions including folk, classical, Bollywood music and fusion was an attempt by Dr Subramaniam to bring various celebrated artists from different parts of country under one roof.

Subramanima has also composed for feature films including "Salaam Bombay" and "Mississippi Masala" and Bernardo Bertolucci's "Little Buddha" and Merchant Ivory production "Cotton Mary".
