MUMBAI: British MPs have moved a motion in the House of Commons opposing plans by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to off-shore jobs in Hindi, Urdu and other World Service units to their countries of origin.

The motion, supported by several MPs, says: "That this House is opposed to the outsourcing of BBC World Service jobs from the UK; is gravely concerned at the arrangement the BBC has entered into with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)...which gives the Pakistan authority, an agency of a foreign state, prior clearance for all contents and programmes transmitted on behalf of the World Service by local Pakistani stations."

According to a PTI report, journalists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other units have been protesting against the moves by organising protests at the BBC office here. The National Union of Journalists has also taken up the case. The early day motion moved by George Galloway, MP, opposed the off-shoring, and also expressed grave concern over the BBC entering into an arrangement with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) that allegedly compromises its editorial independence.

The motion also "notes that a commitment to editorial independence is enshrined in the BBC's charter; believes that the arrangement with PEMRA jeopardises that independence; and calls on the Government to withhold its approval for this and similar arrangements".

Besides Galloway, the motion has so far been signed by Paul Holmes, Mohammad Sarwar, Dai Davies, Lynne Jones, Ann Cryer and Bob Russell, says the PTI report.
