T-Series shuts down US-based infringing music website

MUMBAI: The music industry in the country has been losing crores per annum due to online music piracy and the Indian music companies have taken a long time to enforce its rights against online infringers due to the inherent nature of the worldwide web.

However, lately music companies are resorting to cost-effective measures to combat such piracy without incurring exorbitant legal expenses. Apart from pursuing remedies available under Indian laws, music companies are also using the take down provisions of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to disable access to online content which infringes their copyright.

Recently, pursuant to a DMCA takedown notice by Super Cassettes Industries Ltd., the online music streaming website www.dishant.com was shut down.

T-Series president Neeraj Kalyan said, "The proprietor of the website www.dishant.com flatly refused to take a license for the use of our copyrighted works and was confident that we wouldn't take him to court. We hope that this will serve as a warning to all those who are engaged in brazen infringement of our works that T-Series will deploy all available remedies to protect our valuable repertoire....

T-Series  is one of the major players in the Indian music industry that has been proactive in taking legal action against infringers in India and has expanded its fight against infringement to the worldwide web.
