'Sukhwinder didn't want to sit among the audience and clap at the Oscars'

MUMBAI: As Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars, many were glued to their television screens, waiting to watch Sukhwinder Singh perform the much acclaimed â€?Jai ho' track with maestro Rahman at the 81st Academy Awards ceremony at Kodak Theatre. Many were disappointed when  Sukhwinder failed to turn up. There have been many reports in the media speculating at length about his absence ever since.

Clearing the confusions, Sukhwinder's official spokenperson told Radioandmusic.com, As Sukhwinder was supposed to perform at the Oscars with Rahman, he was waiting for the much needed work permit. But the papers didn't reach on time and without them, he could not submit his passport for stamping. As he could not perform at the award winning night, he didn't want to sit among the audiences and clap as Rahman performed on stage!...

Apparently, Sukhwinder does not believe in multi-entry visa and prefers to get his passport stamped every time he makes a foreign tour, the spokesperson added.

Sukhwinder was excited and looking forward to the live performance at the Oscars and they had composed a new version of â€?Jai Ho' especially for the event but the slow processing of paper work came as a hurdle.... With Sukhwinder opting to stay back, Rahman performed two tracks, â€?Jai ho' and 'O saya' assisted by dancers and singer John Legend

To make up for his absence at the Oscars, an event was organised on Monday evening in Mumbai with Sukhwinder addressing the media after the victory. The singer maintained at the event that Rahman is not to be blamed, and someone must have played foul. It was up to him to decide who he wanted to take with him. I couldn't have begged him for a show and I'm sure Rahman is not the culprit, someone must have played foul. I'm sure Rahman will explain when he comes back, but I'm not going to ask him anything,... Sukhvinder told the media.
