Sagar Desai to get his due for Quick Gun Murugan

MUMBAI: Quick Gun Murugan would approve. Composer Sagar Desai has got industry biggies Fox Star Studios, Sony Music as well as QGM film producers Phat Phish to acknowledge his work on the album that gives QGM the film its distinctive edge.

Desai, whose name had been dropped from the credits on the CDs, posters, theatrical prints and the website, has been assured that his name will now appear in all these places. The out of court settlement reached with the three parties however has not resulted in any pecuniary compensation for Desai.

Following the music launch of QGM, Desai had filed a case in the Delhi High court against  Sony Music Entertainment India, Fox Star Studios (distributors/copyright owners)  and producer of Quick Gun Murugan Phat Phish India  (original producers). Says Desai, It came as a disappointment that they didn't credit me for my work. I had a spat with the company post the release and ended up filing a law suit. However, it has been ruled that all the new CDs in the stores will have due credits....

The companies involved reached an out-of-court settlement with Desai and agreed to give credit for five songs in the album. Desai mentions that Fox Star has agreed that all theatrical prints will carry credits of him as music composer for the film.

Sony Music has also agreed to affix stickers with Desai's name on the existing stock in retails stores. It has been reported that the process of affixing the stickers on existing stock in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai will be completed by 7 September 2009. Desai states, Music released post 27 August 2009 will carry his credits as music composer in the inlay cards....

Quick Gun Murugan's official website, copyrighted to Fox Star Studios, currently gives credits to music composer Raghu Dixit for a track, lyricist Shellee, remixed versions by Deep and DJ Chandu but misses the orginal composer of the film Sagar Desai.

The issue surfaced, says Desai, because he had overlooked the clause of the contract and signed it which mentioned that he has no rights on the music. Following the contract, the company didn't have any obligation to mention Sagar Desai as the music composer

Although many music reviews credited him as the composer of the tracks, there were some who acknowledged the Jai ho' singer Vijay Prakash as the composer. Prakash was shocked to discover his name in credits as music composer. He affirms, As the name of the composer was not mentioned, some music reviews did mention me as a singer turned composer! As a creative person, I value creativity and wanted to rectify the misunderstanding. To mend it, I mentioned on my Facebook account that Sagar Desai is the composer and I have rendered my vocals to the tracks....

Prior to Quick Gun Murugan, Sagar Desai had composed for Mithya, Straight, Dil Kabbadi. He is now composing for Bengali film director Aparna Sen's forthcoming film, The Japanese Wife'.
