Sachin-Jigar: "We have given our best in Ramaiya Vastavaiya"

MUMBAI: After creating many experimental tracks for recent films like ABCD and Go Goa Gone, the versatile composer duo Sachin-Jigar have ventured into pure commercial zone with their latest soundtrack in Ramaiya Vastavaiya.

Marking their second association with dance genius Prabhudeva, the duo had a comfortable rapport with the director demanding simple tunes as the film was based in the countryside. Although the composers incorporated their experimental style in the music through different genres like romance, dance and folk, the songs also encompass a true commercial feel of bollywood movies today.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, one half of the duo Sachin said, “Pradhudeva understands dance and music very well. He was very emotional about the film and wanted us to give it a lot of priority. Every line of the song was discussed with him and we are happy he liked our work. He had a very clear idea what he wanted and gave us full freedom to work in our way.”

Considering that the film is the remake of the Telugu blockbuster Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, there were many reference points for the duo in terms of music. But they claim that they understood what they should not do and what will not work in the bollywood market here.

The conventional bollywood film features six original tracks penned by Priya Panchal and rendered by Shreya Ghoshal, Atif Aslam, Mika Singh, Neha Kakkar, Mohit Chauhan and Monali Thakur. The composers received several references through Prabhudeva, Kumar Taurani and more, where they had fundamental discussions on the songs being scored.

Jigar stated, “The film is a full masala entertainer. We have been doing experimental music but now hope to fit into the purely commercial zone. We gave it our best shot in this film and are waiting to see if the audience likes it.”

With the film comprising of a mix of romantic, dance and item numbers, the duo stated that they did feel the pinch when composing the romantic tracks but it’s the variety of tracks that adds the flavour to the entire album.

Featuring more than three romantic numbers, the challenge for the duo was to keep them differentiated and have a quality as they wanted Shreya Ghoshal to render them. Thus the key differentiator for them apart from tunes and lyrics became the musical arrangement and instruments which helped to draw out the lines.

While Bariyan is a pure folk infused track, Jeene Laga Hoon is a pure romantic melody in bollywood style and Rang Jo Lagyo encompasses a mix of war drums and guitars to give it a different feel.

“There are briefs where you get to do all types of songs without the situation demanding for it. That is what gets us worried. We did feel the pinch with so many romantic tracks but the instruments helped us in keeping their styles different. It is great to see new directors with new scripts giving musicians a chance to showcase their talent,” Sachin expressed.

Apart from that, the music album also has an item track Jadoo Ki Jhappi which was given a dance feel instead of a fun loving village song as per the storyline of the film.

With the trend in bollywood films currently focusing on the presence of item numbers to make it a hit, Sachin mentioned that he was glad the song was not only for mere promotional purpose.

He said, “I believe that item songs should not be there without any use. Luckily, the film had such a situation, so we thought that instead of a regular village type song we will give it a dance feel. This was a test of our wit and it worked out for us. Everyone was confident about our talent and the music.”

Inspite of that, the duo believes that it’s the melodies that will go a long way and have the longest shelf life.  The duo echoed, “Item songs are fun to have but it is like popcorn. You should compose all kinds of songs, but at the end of it for your own and the listeners’ benefit you need to have melodious numbers in your kitty.”

Taking the same thought forward, the experimental duo has recently finished composing music for their first film under the Yash Raj banner. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film stars Parineeti Chopra in pivotal role.

Jigar commented, “Going forward with our style, we have also experimented a lot in this film and hope that the audience likes it.”

Aiming to do substantial work and a steady number of movies per year, the composers will also start work on Illuminati Film’s next film with Saif Ali Khan.
