NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting minister Ambika Soni is considering the recommendations of the National Film Awards Jury that a separate award should be instituted for background music in films.

The feature film jury headed by eminent filmmaker Sai Paranjpye wanted the lyrics of songs entered for the awards to be translated in English along with other information about the song. She also wanted the DFF to make arrangements for high-definition or digi-beta screenings.

The 55th National Film Awards for 2007 will be presented by President Pratibha Patil in a ceremony at the Vigyan Bhawan in the capital on 21 October.

Directorate of Film Festivals sources told radioandmusic.com that the process of selection of films for awards for 2008 would also be completed in February 2010 and the awards presented soon after, thus clearing the backlog created because of a legal case in the Delhi High Court.

Meanwhile, the sources said that although the screening of the national award-winning films is held after the awards presentation every year, these would be screened from next week. It is learnt that this has been necessitated partly because of the preoccupation of DFF with the forthcoming International Film Festival of India in Goa from 23 November to 3 December and because the Sirifort Auditorium is being shut down for renovation.
