Rare musical tribute to Shammi Kapoor on his first death anniv

NEW DELHI: A Shammi Kapoor fan successfully bid Rs 74,235 at a recent auction to acquire the shehnai used by the late actor in the movie ‘Rockstar’.

According to the bidder Sanjeev Malhotra, who is Information and Facilitation Officer in a Government of India Department, this was his proudest acquisition where he bid a total of over Rs 1.6 million to acquire 32 items. The bid took place at the 1st Osian’s Cinefan Auction of Indian Cinema Memorabilia at the fest this year.

Today being the first death anniversary of Shammi Kapoor, this acquisition becomes even more special, Malhotra told Radioandmusic.com.

Malhotra’s another special acquisition was Long Playing records from the film ‘Harjaai’ (Rs 114,726), for which he wants to acquire a gramophone player.

His one regret is that he failed to bid successfully for the last recorded song of the legendary Kishore Kumar on 10 October just three days before he died in 1987. The song was auctioned for Rs 1.56 million to the Kingdom of Dreams.

Malhotra, along with his son Manwin, successfully bid for some rare artifacts and posters and even outbid Bollywod actor Aamir Khan who was bidding on phone. Sanjeev – who says he ‘eats, sleeps and drinks films’ - has a story to tell about each of his acquisitions. It is amazing to see the unbeatable spirit of a wheelchair bound Malhotra, who gets very animated when talking about his acquisitions.

He says he has been a film buff from his childhood and even his disability – the result of polio when he was just three years old – has not deterred him from this enthusiasm.

Apart from the music memorabilia, Malhotra has also acquired the autographed cricket bat that Aamir Khan and his team used in the film ‘Lagaan’, Shammi Kapoor’s scarf from the film ‘Junglee’, the actor’s sweater from Andaz, a poster of Dilip Kumar-starrer ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and three posters and photographs related to Amitabh Bachchan.
