Radio stations gear up for I-day

MUMBAI: To celebrate the 65th year of independence in various patriotic hues, private FM radio stations have designed special I-day content.

Fever FM Delhi has initiated a unique on-ground program to check the security of the capital, which will be aired in the morning show ‘Dilli ke do Dabanng’ from 7 – 11am. The show’s RJs Manu and Suhas will test the security of popular and crowded areas like Chandni Chowk, Karol baug, High Court, railways etc.

The radio jockeys will encourage the listeners to do the same through an interactive session where in they will ask callers’ to contribute towards the security of the country. The promos and capsules of the initiative will also be carried through-out the day.

In Mumbai, Fever has planned to carry out an educational drive ‘Freedom-Mission Shiksha’ for the entire day.  The initiative will execute a drive against illiteracy, wherein the station will encourage listeners to contribute notebooks for the children-in-need. Several Bollywood stars like Boman Irani and Farhan Khan amongst others have already lent their supports by donating notebooks.

Apart from Fever’s initiatives, Radio Mirchi has also come up with a unique initiative to commemorate the day. The network has initiated an endeavour titled ‘India ke Radio Postcards’, which will bring forth untold stories of the freedom struggle that swept the diverse regions of India and united them under a single umbrella of devotion. Collaborating on this effort, various Mirchi stations from North, South, East and West regions recorded audio postcards and shared stories of freedom struggle from their particular states.

The audio postcards chronicle the iconic rebellions and movements of ‘Dandi March’ in Gujarat, ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ triggered by Mangal Pandey in Uttar Pradesh, ‘Simon Go Back’ movement in Punjab, ‘Chittagong’ movement in Bengal, Maulana Azad’s ‘Quit India’ movement in Delhi, the revolution led by Swatantryaveer Savarkar in Maharashtra, Mailara Mahadevappa’s guerilla warfare in Karnataka and Veer Kunwar Singh’s rebellion in Bihar. Mirchi’s Mumbai station will also play anecdotes of India’s unyielding struggle for freedom on 15 August.

Another leading player Big FM has organized special programming for the day. As part of its association with BBC, the network will air interviews with Olympian stalwarts Gagan Narang, Mary Kom, Vijay Kumar, Sushil Kumar, Joydeep Karmakar, Devendro and P Kashyap, who have made the country proud. The athletes will narrate their proudest moment at the Olympics, dreams, aspirations, what they would like to change about the country, the freedom they desire, their vision for sports in the country and more. They will also share rare never before heard insights on their lives and struggles.

The show will also touch upon the lighter sides of their lives like their favourite songs and stars amongst others. Big FM RJs across the network will also play patriotic songs across genres that have inspired the Indian athletes.

While in Delhi, Big has spirited a unique theme ‘Chhutti nahi, Azaadi manayega’ to celebrate patriotism. The station has planned a special on-ground program, wherein RJ’s will interact and discuss the various aspects of freedom with school children and renowned celebrities.

The station will commence the day with RJ Vidhi visiting Modern School at Barakhamba Road, she will interact and discuss with school children about the future of our country.  RJ Vidhi will later visit Jindal Steel and Power Limited Chairman & MD and member of Parliament Naveen Jindal who will share the story of why it was important for him as an Indian to get the freedom to fly the flag.

In the afternoon, RJ Neetu will share the story of Shehnaaz Hussain  who is consider as the leader of herbal care and beauty products. Helping its listeners to reach their goal, the show will also offer   inspiring tips. In the evening RJ Vidhi will once again spend time with the group of free spirited ladies of Cooking Academics led by Neeta. The show will offer special gastronomic prepared specially for Independence Day.

RJ Rahul Makin will conclude the day with Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi, who will express freedom through his songs. The singer will also share the importance of freedom.

Also doing its bit for the independence day celebrations, Red FM Mumbai is featuring stories of those people who have seen and lived through the freedom struggle of 1947. The experiences will be aired on the morning breakfast show ‘Morning No.1’ hosted by RJ Malishka.

The network will also converse with the families of the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country during the freedom struggle but today their descendants are struggling to make a living in this age. The RJs will be speaking to the descendants of freedom fighters like Tatya Tope, Bahadur Shah Zafar and Udham Singh amongst others.

Meanwhile, Radio Mantra is back with its second edition of ‘Friendship se Freedom Tak’ this independence day. The station aims to build an army with its listeners to protect the monuments and heritage sites across its network in Jalandhar, Agra, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Hissar, Karnal, Ranchi and Varanasi.

The initiative kicked off on Friendship Day where the network encouraged the audience to extend a hand of friendship towards their city by joining the ‘Mantra Army’. The ten day campaign will witness the listeners choosing the monuments, water bodies and places of interest that really need help from not only the authorities but also the habitants. The aim is to educate people to refrain from scribbling on the walls of heritage buildings and monuments, spitting on the streets, urinating in open and littering.

Commenting on the initiative Radio Mantra national programming head Kanwar Sameer said, “65 years of Independence, but we are still struggling with the basics. It’s high time that we realize our responsibility and take control by coming forward for a cause like this. Places of historical importance like Agra fort, river Ganga in Varanasi, Ranchi jheel, Kushinagar in Gorakhpur, Kaali Bein in Jalandhar and Karnal fort are our pride and need our immediate attention.”

The activity will culminate on 15 August with a special candle march led by RJs at prominent places in the cities.
