MUMBAI: Radio Misty's Gangtok and Siliguri stations will launch a new show solely devoted to ghazals beginning 21 June 2009. The new show will be called Shaam-E-Ghazal' – and is a blend of ghazals, mushairas and live on-air' performance by leading ghazal singers .This show has been done after extensive research, says Radio Misty CEO Nishat Mittal, This was one of our random surveys that we found that our listeners have a strong liking for ghazals and it's not just the mid-age listeners, but also youngsters who are showing interest....
The show will be hosted by RJ Sunit who will play select ghazals (film and albums) to pamper listeners' tastes from 9 pm onwards. Speaking about the live on air performances, Mittal says, The live performances will include a mix of local ghazal singers and popular ghazal singers.... The show will also be informational as it will give background information about the artistes and songs that would be played during the show. The station also plans to have a ghazal countdown. Earlier, Radio Misty had included ghazals in all late night shows, which had received favourable response from listeners, said Mittal.
Besides Radio Misty, stations like My FM and Fever have also started airing weekend ghazal shows, while Radio City had a similar show some years ago. This is surely a good trend,... says Mittal, about metro stations opening up to the ghazal genre.
Radioandmusic.com had earlier reported about ghazals disappearing into the vast shadow cast by Bollywood music. After hearing about the show, young ghazal singer Mohamad Vakil couldn't be more happier. I think it's a great move by radio stations, particularly in the non-metros, as they experiment and are more open. I have heard so much from my mentors about the contribution radio stations made to ghazals when FM stations where not around – I am glad situation is improving,... he says.
