Pritam named Best Composer at Asian Film Awards

MUMBAI: Continuing his winning streak, ace composer Pritam Chakraborty better known as Pritam, bagged the Best Composer award for Anurag Basu’s Barfi, at the seventh Asian Film Awards held in Hong Kong on 18 March.

India bagged two wins at the prestigious awards acknowledging talent from the Asia Pacific region. Nawazuddin Siddiqui won the Best Supporting Actor trophy for ‘Talaash’. India had been nominated in seven categories: Gangs of Wasseypur Part- 1 & 2 for Best Film, Anurag Kashyap for Best Director (Gangs of Wasseypur- Part 1 & 2);  Wasiq Khan for Best Production Designer (Gangs of Wasseypur- Part 1 & 2); Rajeev Ravi for Best Cinematographer (Gangs of Wasseypur- Part 1 & 2); Anand Gandhi for Best Screenwriter (Ship of Theseus); Nawazuddin Siddiqui for Best Supporting Actor (Talaash) and Pritam for Best Composer (Barfi).

In the 14 award categories, 30 films with 70 nominees from across Asia were recognized for their excellence in cinema.

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who has played various characters ranging from a James Bond girl to Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, was honoured with Excellence in Asian Cinema Award at the ceremony.

Best Production Designer: Bahman Ghobadi & Ali Daryai for Rhino Season [Turkey]

Best Composer: Pritam Chakraborty for Barfi! [India]

Best Editor: Mototaka Kusakabe for The Kirishima Thing [Japan]

Best Visual Effects: Farbod Khoshtinat for Rhino Season [Iran]

Best Costume Design: Man Lim-chung for The Silent War [China/HK]
