Peshawar launches first ever radio channel for legal awareness

MUMBAI: With an aim to raise awareness about legal issues, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a license to Radio Meezan FM 96.6 of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy that was inaugurated in Peshawar on 20 March.

The Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court (PHC) Justice Dost Muhammad Khan inaugurated the FM radio station with an aim to impart distant learning to those related to the justice sector and to educate and sensitize masses about their fundamental rights.

He said that FM Radio has played a significant role to guide, educate and emanate information of public importance to the masses especially to the vulnerable segment of the society.

Being the first ever radio channel for legal awareness, Radio Meezan, a project of Judicial Academy has been established within the precinct of the academy. The station will provide a forum to the weaker and down trodden segment of the society where they could discuss their legal and social issues to seek legal advice.

It will air news bulletins in Pashto, Urdu and English for five minutes, besides arranging news reports, news packages, discussion, lecture forum and live presentations amongst others.

Justice Khan termed the launch of the FM broadcast a great achievement as its delivery of service would have manifold effects on the society. The importance of media also could not be denied as it had played an important role not only in the movement for restoration of judiciary but also for democracy in the country.

He also stated that initially the range of the station would be in the provincial capital but in the next few months it would be extended to the entire province and the target audience will include general public, judges, lawyer, law students, prosecutors, investigators, women, children, minorities and the rural population. He added that they would also try to launch a television channel of the academy in the near future whenever funds were generated for that purpose.

"I hope and pray that Radio Meezan will become an effective mode for legal and social awareness and will be helpful in creating a society based on justice," he added.

The station director of the radio and senior director research and publication judicial academy, Mohammad Aamir Nazir also gave a presentation and highlighted the salient features of Radio Meezan.

Present at the occasion were High Court judges Justice Mian Fasehulmulk, Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhail, Justice Shajehan Akhunzada and Justice Irshad Qaisar, UNDP and PCNA members, chairman and professors of the department of journalism and mass communication, lawyers and more.
