Penn Masala to perform in India

MUMBAI: After re-creating Rahman’s Vande Mataram for a bollywood music channel, world’s first Hindi a Cappella band Penn Masala is all set to perform across all Hard Rock Café (HRC) outlets in the country. They will perform on 4 January at HRC Mumbai.

After Mumbai, Penn Masala is scheduled to play at HRC outlets in Pune (6 Jan), Hyderabad (9 Jan), Bangalore (10 Jan) and New Delhi (11 Jan).

Well known for its unique sound, the band blends the best of Hindi music with the latest from the global musical scenes. It comprises of Akiff Premjee, Akshat Vaidya, Ashwin Muthiah, Anil Chitrapu, Dhruv Maheshwari, Dilip Rajan, Prashant Ramesh, Ram Narayan, Rohan Murthy, Sam Levenson, Varshil Patel and Chetan Khanna.

Formed in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania, the South Asian group creates music that traverses traditional cultural boundaries and captures the experience of growing up with competing Eastern and Western cultures. As per the cappella style, the band uses their vocals to emulate the sounds of the various musical instruments. Their compositions are primarily sung in English or Hindi, but some songs also include Arabic, Punjabi, Kannada and Tamil. Their music has grown to attract fans from all backgrounds, and they in-turn have been influenced by a wide range of cultures. The band’s original compositions showcase innovative sounds, rich textures and complex arrangements encompassing Hindi-English mashups, Western pop and Eastern melodies.

They have earlier performed for renowned personalities like AR Rahman, Mukesh Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Lakshmi Mittal, Anderson Cooper, Ban-Ki-Moon and Barack Obama amongst others.
