Nokia leads Indian mobile handset market: Cybermedia report

MUMBAI: In the India mobile handsets market, Nokia has retained leadership position with 30% share in terms of sales (unit shipments), followed by Samsung at second position with 11.6% during the month of September 2011. This was reported in the IndiaMonthlyMobileHandsets Market Review, September 2011 released by CyberMedia Research.

As per the report, the total mobile handset shipments during the first nine months of calendar year 2011 touched 135 million units, as the market first dipped during the April-May-June 2011 quarter and then recovered in the quarter July-August-September 2011.

On an average, the proportion of dual-SIM and multi-SIM handsets were 55.8% of total mobile handset shipments in the country in the July-August-September 2011 quarter. Nokia, a late entrant to the multi-SIM device category, made up by having as many as five models on offer by September 2011.

The report states that Smartphone shipments touched 7.9 million units in first nine months growing from 2.3 million in 1Q 2011 to over 3 million in 3Q 2011. During the month of September alone smartphones sales (unit shipments) crossed 1 million units. Samsung is the leading vendor with a market share of 39.7% in terms of sales (unit shipments), followed by Nokia at the second position with 34.7% during the month of September 2011.

CyberMedia Research Telecoms Practice lead analyst Naveen Mishra said, "Smartphones are witnessing an increased adoption in the India market; not only amongst business executives but also among the youth as such devices offer superior usability, entertainment and functional capabilities....
