National Anthem completes a century

MUMBAI: A symbol of pride and patriotism binding together various cultures and religions of the nation during every triumph and uprising, India's National Anthem'- Jana Gana Mana has completed a century today.

Written in highly Sanskritized (Tatsama) Bengali, Jana Gana Mana is a five-stanza Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The first stanza of the song has been adopted as the National Anthem of India.

There are several renderings of the full song, including some by great music legends like D.K. Pattamal, Bhimsen Joshi, Dr Balamurali Krishna, Pandit Jasraj, Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupen Hazarika — in their trademark style.

The poem was composed in December 1911, at the time of the Coronation Durbar of George V. Tagore however translated Jana Gana Mana in English as the Morning Song of India, addressing God and the motherland in it. It was first sung at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress on 27 December 1911 and was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian National Anthem on 24 January, 1950.
