Musical concert 'Smritiyaan' to pay tribute to legends

MUMBAI: Paying tribute to the legacy of classical legends like tabla stalwart Pandit Chatur Lal (tabla), Pandit Ravi Shankar (sitar) and late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (sarod), the annual musical concert titled ‘Smritiyaan’ will be held on 17 January at Sanmukhanada Hall, Mumbai.

Presented by Pandit Chaturlal Memorial Society, the concert will witness Sufi and ragas jugalbandi by Roop Kumar Rathod (vocal) and Pandit Ronu Majumdar (flute). The concert will also feature a percussion expression by Trilok Gurtu, who will also be felicitated with the ‘Pandit Chaturlal Excellence Award’. The musical evening will culminate with a grand finale by the trio - Tirlok Gurtu, Roop Kumar Rathod and Ronu Majumdar.

Pandit Chaturlal Excellence Award was started in honour of Pandit Chatur Lal ji after his sudden demise in 1965 by Ambassadors of United States.  Since last year, on the occasion of the 85th birth anniversary of Pandit Chaturlal ji, the memorial society has revived this prestigious award.  Earlier recipients of this award include Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Birju Maharaji and Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra.

Pandit Chaturlal Memorial Society was founded in 1990 by Charanjit Lal, his eldest son to commemorate the work of the maestro and promote art and culture. The society has since been organising concerts of young maestros by giving them a platform along with legends like, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Smt Sitara Devi, Pt Birju Maharaj, Late Ustad Vilayat Khan, Late Pt Kishan Maharaj, Late Uastad Bismillah Khan and more.
