Marathi music director makes film debut with Asha Bhonsle and Javed Ali

MUMBAI: After working together with director Yogesh Jadhav on various Marathi jingles and television series, both, music composer- Nikhil Mahamuni and Jadhav will make their Marathi film debut with the upcoming 'Natee' (Heroine).

The period film chronicles the rise of girl with a dream of becoming a "natee" whilst facing the loss of innocence and various obstacles that come her way. For his directorial debut, Jadhav worked closely with Mahamuni to accurately indicate the difference in timelines (the film moves from the early 1960's to 2014).

'Natee' has three tracks in total, the first being the title song- 'Me Natee'. This songs feature vocals by the "incredible" chanteuse Asha Bhosle. The second track in the film is a romantic duet called 'Hur Hur Hee' and features vocals by Javed Ali and Neha Rajpal. The final song 'Chatak Matak' is infused with folk music, yet keeping it peppy. Mahamuni stated that the track aims at creating the feeling among friends of "sitting on the college 'katta' and having a blast".

Having music legends like Asha Bhosle and Javed Ali sing for his debut film has Mahamuni rather 'ecstatic'. "Ever since I started composing, it has been my dream to have Ashaji sing for me. And to have her sing the first song in my first film... I am simply over the moon right now," exclaimed Mahamuni.

He also makes a cameo in the second track. Mahamuni is seen instructing actor Subodh Bhave on how to play the grand piano, which is featured in the video. The Pune-based musician feels that in the current music scene, with the rise of commercial mainstream music, the melody of a song is taken for granted. "To go back to roots of melodious music, I have used piano and saxophone in 'Hur Hur Hee'," he stated.

In addition to 'Natee', Mahamuni is currently working on two more films, but remains tight-lipped about them.

The film hits theatres Friday, 19 September.
