Mangiamo's clientele stay away from Bollywood music: Devesh Chhabria

Food (we include wine at Radioandmusic.com) and music are synonymous with most things fun, celebratory and hedonistic. Through the millennia, both have played a major role in almost every party ever hosted by the Homo sapiens.

Circa 21st century, the symbioses between food and music has been refined to fine art- both complimenting each other and creating the right ambiance for hedonistic revelers to enjoy their meal as well as let their hair hand down.

Mumbai is no ‘backwoods’ town when it comes to providing a good time to its citizens. Though the once ubiquitous dance bars might have been shut, and prices of drinks might have headed way north, there is still very much fun to be had.

Radioandmusic.com goes uptown for an inside view of how the food and music are fused together from owner of Bandra’s swanky Italian Resto-lounge ‘Mangiamo’ (meaning ‘Let’s Eat’ in Italian) owner Devesh Chhabria.

The fine dining lounge is arranging for live DJs- international and domestic- to play a variety of music for the city’s fun people to groove with while enjoying their north Italian red wines from its well-stocked bar, pepperoni pizzas and risottos.

Excerpts:

What is the connection between fine dining experience and music?

The connection between fine dining and music is fairly straightforward; both are mediums that provide an experience. I think the enjoyment is completely genuine as nothing that doesn't impress lasts long especially through the ages as you say.

At Mangiamo we combined the two to create an air of comfort and ease wherein our chef Rahul combines his talents with the grooviest DJ's around. After all, who can say no to good music and food?

Is the concept of restaurants with DJs well entrenched or it is a recent development?

Mumbai is one of few places in the world that really knows to party so when Friday night beckons a typical Mumbaikar aka. Bombayite traditionally hits the lounge and the bar and parties through the night.

The concept of DJs in not a recent development at all and from what we have seen from the music scene it is here to last.

What is the party style of the city’s revelers? Is the culture of going to pubs/clubs and restaurants growing?

The parties in the city can be broken up into two types; a section that prefers a basically chill out over drinks, and the other that prefers to party hard into the wee hours of the morning.

Yes the culture of pubs and restaurants is growing as people love to enjoy their food with great music, this is core founding of our Friday nights.

Coming to Mangiamo- what kind of experience can you offer your clientele?

Mangiamo weekender is a concept of bringing a truly international experience to our guests. Musically, Mangiamo weekenders are intentionally staying away from mainstream commercial or Bollywood music. Our guests get to experience the best in fine dining and can let their hair down with the best of international music.

We have already had some of the biggest names on the local and international DJ circuits perform here. For our opening night we had Broken Hartz Club (Berlin), and DJ Uri (UK). Over the next few weekends, Kris Correya, DJ Reji, DJ Cyrus (Urban Distortion) Frame/Frame, Johnny B have performed playing various styles of music ranging from deep house, minimal, electro, tech house, brrakbeat etc. Friday (28 June) night we have  Ghetto Funk nite featuring DJ Uri and Big city Harmonics playing Nu skool, old skool hip hop, funk etc.

Does it make financial sense to incorporate live music to dining experience?

Anything that makes the customer happy makes financial sense.
