MUMBAI: The Indian Music Industry responsible for combating piracy in India, today announced a turnkey victory over the widespread ‘digital piracy’ menace prevalent in India.

A press note said, ninety per cent of the offending sites which were served notices have been blocked by most of the Internet Service Providers approached by IMI.

IMI obtained Mandatory Injunction Orders from the Kolkata High Court (dated 27 January, 6 February, 1 March & 2 March) directing 388 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block 104 Music Copyright Infringing websites within 36 hours of the date of the intimation.  IMI & PPL president Vijay Lazarus said, “Piracy is an impending problem for India’s media and entertainment industry, causing losses of about $4 billion every year. We are delighted to note that the efforts of the IMI are already bearing fruit. This is yet another milestone achieved by us and gives us the added confidence to continue with our fight against piracy.”  According to a study conducted by IMI, leading ISPs such as Airtel, BSNL, MTS, Reliance, Vodafone, Idea and Tata Telecom have blocked sites that were infringing on the music copyrights.

Trai data suggests that these seven service providers account for over 80% of the market share in datacards as well as broadband access in India.

In addition to the ISPs mentioned above, other significant ISPs such as Sify, Netmagic, United Telecom, Conjoinix Technologies, Telstar among others have sent in letters confirming successful blocking of illegal websites at their end.

IMI secretary general Savio D'Souza said, “Piracy was thought to be an unbeatable demon, especially with the internet becoming ubiquitous. Our efforts and actions of the last few months have shown us that where the intent is right, nothing is impossible. We are grateful to the courts for taking cognizance of the matter and for upholding the law of the land.”

He further added, “The success of IMI in the fight against piracy has shown that not only can piracy be tackled, but also that the laws of the land are adequate and strong. Not only have the courts taken cognizance of the seriousness of the matter, the ISPs have shown strong willingness to cooperate with the music industry too.”   Validating the benefits of this initiative, legitimate online e-commerce sites such as Flipkart and consumer electronics companies such as Nokia have confirmed a subsequent increase in their online business.
