`High School Musical 2` debuts at No. 1 on Billboard charts

MUMBAI: Close on the heels of its premiere on cable television in the US, Disney Channel`s original movie High School Musical 2 soundtrack has debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album charts, based on sales of 615,000 copies.

This is the second highest one-week total for an album this year. In its first week, it also certified gold in Ireland, the UK, Canada, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia.

The Disney Music Group is also celebrating as three of its titles are in the Top Ten charts today. Apart from the High School Musical 2 soundtrack soaring to No .1 spot on the Billboard 200 charts for the week ending 1 September, Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus (Walt Disney Records/Hollywood Records) moved in at No 2, and Jonas Brothers (Hollywood Records) self titled album at No. 8.

The High School Musical 2 claims to have become the first television soundtrack to ever debut at No. 1. The soundtrack also enters three other Billboard charts at No. 1: Top Soundtrack Albums, Top Kid Audio, and Top Digital Albums, informs an official release issued by the company.

The second edition of the made-for-television movie was the most-watched cable telecast of all time among total viewers as its viewership touched 17.2 million when it premiered on the Disney Channel five days ago.

Last year, the soundtrack to the first High School Musical TV movie spent two non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, and was the first television movie soundtrack to reach the top spot.
