Lalit Pandit lends tunes to Kapil Sibal's lyrics

MUMBAI: Having worked with numerous lyricists in his long career, veteran music director Lalit Pandit has now given music to lyrics penned by Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal for an upcoming film by Kabir Lal.

The duo has collaborated for the upcoming film ‘Samman’ directed by Kabir Lal starring Vivek Oberoi in a pivotal role. Based in Rajasthan, the soundtrack comprises of eight songs featuring Sufi, romantic and folk genres. Currently under production, it will be unveiled in the latter half of the year.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Pandit said, “It is a wonderful film which has some really good musical situations. Kapil Sabil very kindly penned all the songs. The album is under production currently and most of the songs are ready. Since the film is based in Rajasthan, it will feature some folk based songs along with romantic and Sufi numbers.”

The film marks the second outing of Sibal as lyricist, with the first being a film titled ‘Bandook’. He was introduced to Pandit through one of the film’s producers who is also a member of the minister’s constituency. Hearing about his work, Sibal expressed his desire to meet the composer, who then met him in Delhi and discussed music. Apparently, Sibal sat with the director and wrote each song as per the situation in the film.

Talking about the meeting, Pandit stated, “He has a great understanding of music and writes wonderfully well. He writes very meaningful songs and is a very methodical worker. He narrated his words to me and I immediately liked them. After the meeting, I composed tunes based on the words and he heard them when he came here last week. He was extremely happy and has just sent me another song for the film.”

Impressed by the writing skills of the talented minister, the composer now aims to compose and create a bank of songs on lyrics penned by Sibal. With a host of projects up his sleeve, Pandit plans to present these songs to producers of his future films.

“I understand writers as I have worked with so many of them in my career. I feel the kind of songs Mr Sibal has written are missing now and are much needed. Lyrics are not being given any importance now, so we need such songs so that people will remember music in the times to come as well,” he commented.
