Gaga made the announcement via Twitter. "Aug 19 buy single 'Applause' and pre-order album/app ARTPOP - Gaga," read the promo message, accompanied by a photo of the star cradling a tattooed plastic arm.

Fans will be able to pre-order ARTPOP the same day the single goes on sale on 19 August. Artwork for the new single was released by Women's Wear Daily. It features Gaga wearing white face make-up with blue streaks over her eyes and red and orange splashed across her lips.
