Khayyam honoured with Lata Mangeshkar award

MUMBAI: The 2007 Lata Mangeshkar Award for excellence in music was conferred on veteran music composer Khayyam over the weekend.Speaking at the function held in New Delhi, Khayyam, whose evergreen music has mesmerised audiences for generations said, "God willing, I will start working again. The music of today is not original but remixes and pop. This music is not part of our rich Indian culture. The magic of real music need to be brought back again." Thanking his wife Jagjit Singh Kaur and his friends.

He added, "Had it not been for my wife, I would have never achieved what I have in the last sixty years. I thank her and her family because in spite of her coming from a rich family, she never nagged me about anything or the movies that I had not done." The award, instituted by the Maharashtra government, consists of a trophy, certificate of merit and a cash prize of 1,00,000 rupees.

Welcoming Khayyam`s decision to start composing again, chief guest Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said, "I know in future also he will continue to receive awards because his perspective and vision of music is different from others, says a PTI report.
