Kausar Munir: You need to have original thoughts to be a good lyricist

MUMBAI: After writing soulful numbers like 'Suno Na Sangemarmar' and 'Falak Tak', Kausar Munir will now play the role of a dialogue writer for the upcoming film 'Phantom'. She will also write the lyrics for the Kabir Khan directed film, which stars Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan.

Despite being brought up in Bandra, Mumbai where English is a dominant language, Munir uses a lot of Urdu words in her songs. "I am not trained in Urdu but I come from a family that spoke the language. Since childhood I was good at writing essays in Hindi, but my teachers would often comment that I must not use many Urdu words," she explained.

Having worked with a lot of composers and directors, she gels well with Amit Trivedi and Sajid Wajid. "I also like Pritamda, as he keeps you on your toes most of the times. His ideas come when the mastering is on," she laughed.

Apart from being a lyricist, she is also a hands-on mother to a 12 year old daughter, Sophie. Munir even juggles the responsibility of being a housewife. Calling herself a great multi-tasker, she said, "Of course you cannot write with the pressure cooker whistling and the bell ringing, but I love my life. My family is extremely supportive, particularly my husband who appreciates me and my work. He understands my pressures as a professional, so half the battle is won over there. It is the flexibility of the job that allows me to be a complete family person. "Whenever I write a song, my husband and my daughter are my first listeners and then I have my sisters, who give their feedback," she added. She describes her family as a very close knit one, thus she loves spending her time reading and doing her household chores. "When I am not reading or writing, I spend my time cleaning. I also love travelling, so thrice a year I am on a holiday," she said.

Munir dismissed the idea that being a woman working in Bollywood is difficult. "The people whom I have worked with have so far been very sweet to me. Fortunately I have never come across any bad incidents. If I have been turned down, it has been due to work but never because have been a woman," she said.

According to her in order to be a good lyricist, one needs to have a good command over a particular language, along with the skill and originality of your thoughts. "This is why I like Gulzarsahab. His thoughts are extremely new and original," she added.

In addition to 'Phantom', her upcoming projects include 'Teewar', and she is particular excited about a Ganpati song from the forthcoming film.
