MUMBAI: Karbonn Mobiles has acquired the title sponsorship of the fourth season of Champions League T20 tournament scheduled to be held from 9 October in South Africa.

The commercial rights holder ESPN Star Sports has inked a year-long deal and got Rs 150 million from the handset manufacturer as part of the partnership for the league, which will be called Karbonn Champions League Twenty20. As part of the new deal, Karbonn Mobiles will have rights to on-ground title sponsorship with all its entitlements. Sources reveal that the company will spend around Rs 2 bn on associating with the sport.

The value of the deal is almost the same as Nokia had paid last year but much lower than Airtel’s five-year deal for Rs 1.70 billion. Airtel had ended its title sponsorship deal after two years, realizing that the Champions League (CLT20) event is yet to catch the fancy of the audiences.

The handset manufacturer is also negotiating with ESPN for broadcast sponsorship. Karbonn Mobiles chairman Sudhir Hasija said, “The association with CLT20 is a matter of great pride for Karbonn Mobiles and it gives us a platform to create constructive fan engagement and, thus, generate a buzz around the brand Karbonn and the brand CLT20.”

ESPN Star Sports is also in negotiations to rope in other sponsors for the event. Market sources reveal that Maruti, Toshiba, Hero, Tata Docomo and Sony are some of the major advertisers which are in the process of negotiation.

Karbonn will leverage the sponsorship through 360 degree communication mix with a focus on TV, print, digital and press. For CLT20, Karbonn will extend the ‘Karbonn Smart’ brand extension offering new range of technologically advanced products along with a complete range of smart-feature phone segment as well.

The fourth edition of the Champions League Twenty20 will feature a total of 14 teams and 29 matches across four venues - Centurion, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The group stage will be preceded by a qualifying stage from 9-11 October, while the group stage matches will commence from 13 October.
