Justin Bieber wins big at American Music Awards

MUMBAI: Continuing his winning streak this year, teen pop idol Justin Bieber has also scooped up three trophies at the 40th American Music Awards held yesterday at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

Bieber bagged the ‘Artist of the year’, ‘Pop/rock male artist’ and the ‘Pop/rock album’ awards for his hit soundtrack ‘Believe’. He said, “I want to say this is for all the haters who thought that I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I'm going to be here for a very long time.”

Following up with two wins was rapper Nicki Minaj who picked up the ‘Rap/hip-hop artist’ and ‘Rap/hip-hop album’ award for her album ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’. David Guetta won the show's first-ever electronic dance music award, while Taylor Swift won her fifth consecutive award for ‘Favourite Country Female Artist’. She exclaimed, “This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this.”

Other big winners included Linkin Park, Rihanna, Carly Rae Jepsen, Usher and Katy Perry amongst others. American Music Awards nominees were selected based on sales and airplay, and fans chose the winners by voting online.

Stevie Wonder provided the soundtrack for the show’s 40th anniversary tribute to its creator, Dick Clark. Producer Larry Klein said, “Clark changed the face of music back in the late 50s. He is the one who made rock 'n' roll acceptable in people's homes. We are paying tribute to Clark because of the legacy that he's left everybody and also the creativity of what he did on this show.”

The ceremony was marked by performances of artistes including Usher, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Pink and Pitbull.
