John McLaughlin to receive Haafiz Ali Khan Award

MUMBAI: Guitar maestro John McLaughlin will be receiving the Haafiz Ali Khan Award for the year 2009 for his contribution to the world of music in Mumbai on 24 November 2009 

Haafiz Ali Khan Awards were instituted by the legendary Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in 1985 in memory of his illustrious father and guru Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan Saheb. The Award ceremonies in the past have taken place in all the major cities of India and also in London and Germany. The past receipts include M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Anne Sophie Mutter, John Williams, Julian Bream, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi amongst others.

The basic aim is not only to retain and popularize our cultural heritage, but also to honor living legends from the world of Indian and western classical music for their immense contributions in their respective felids,... says the official statement 

John McLaughlin also known as Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, is an English jazz fusion guitarist and composer. He played with Tony Williams's group Lifetime and then with Miles Davis on his landmark electric jazz-fusion albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. His 1970s electric band, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a technically virtuosic and complex style of music that fused eclectic jazz and rock with eastern and Indian influences. His guitar playing includes a range of styles and genres, including jazz, Indian classical music, fusion, and Western Classical music, and has influenced many other guitarists. He has also incorporated Flamenco music in some of his acoustic recordings. McLaughlin was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"

The Award ceremony will be followed by a Sarod duet by Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan as a tribute to their grand father.
