Jagjit Singh's birthday with doodle

MUMBAI: If you open your Google search page today, you will see our very own Ghazal King Jagjit Singh sitting with his harmonium. This tribute to maestro is to celebrate his 72nd birthday through a doodle.

Padma Bhushan awardee Singh, who passed away on 10 October 2011, continues to be popular with his fans even after his death. According to Google Search Trends, he topped the list of most searched ghazal singers online. He had suffered massive cerebral hemorrhage on 23 September 2011 which resulted in his demise.

Jagmohan Singh popularly known as Jagjit Singh is remembered for some of his popular ghazals like Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar, Koi Yeh Kaise Bataye, Tu Nahin To Zindagi Mein Aur Kya Reha Jayega, Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho, Pyar Mujh Se Jo Kiya Tumne, Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya, Yeh Bata De Mujhe Zindagi, Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar and Yun Zindagi Ki Raah Mein.

Born in Rajasthan, he shifted base in Mumbai after his father encouraged him too. His steps in the Indian music industry had bought a new face to ghazals. His songs were always like water still but deep. His melodious and soothing voice will be an unforgettable memory in the mind of his audiences, like his album 'Unforgettables' which he sang along with his wife Chitra Dutta. Husband –wife duo has done many albums but ‘Unforgettables’ is a very beautiful piece.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ghazal King Jagjit Singh, his wife Chitra Singh will be reforming ‘Jagjit Singh foundation’, which looks forward in promoting and encouraging young and promising talents. This initiative is to keep the late ghazal legend alive. She also plans to launch his precious and timeless unreleased work to maintain his remarkable work fresh for his audience.

Pankaj Udhaas, pupil of Singh is also popular. Singh had paved way to many artistes. He had encouraged artistes from Pakistan to come to India like Ghulam Ali who holds special warmth among Indian audiences.

There were many albums and successful movie tracks in Singh’s musical journey. Amongst them is ‘Live in Concert at Wembley’ and ‘Ecstasies’ which are critically acclaimed. Singh did not shy away from films but worked for movies like Bahuroopi, Avishkaar, Griha Pravesh and Ek Baar Kaho. His all-time classic ‘Hontho Se Chhoo Lo Tum’ in Prem Geet through which he hit mainstream Bollywood success and never really looked back. His next two projects were Arth and Saath Saath.

During his time, Ghazal had reached new heights and held a strong hold in Indian music industry.
