IPL Radio, mobile, internet rights bagged by Times Internet

A consortium led by Times Internet Ltd, part of the Times of India Group, has won for Rs 2.62 billion the IPL's global Radio, mobile and Internet rights, along with television rights in certain territories.

The four-year rights run through 2014, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary N Srinivasan said.

Multi Screen Media (MSM) has the Indian Premier League (IPL) television broadcast rights for the Indian sub-continent until 2017. "The TV rights to the IPL for the Indian sub-continent, which continue to be held by MSM, along with certain other territories, were not part of the tender offer," BCCI clarified.

The bidding process followed after the Supreme Court had, last Friday, given a nod to the BCCI to proceed with the tenders for the new global telecast rights for IPL-4. Justice Mukul Mudgal, retired Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana, was present as observer, as per the court orders.

It may be recalled that in June 2010 the BCCI had terminated the media rights it had earlier awarded to World Sports Group, Mauritius, on grounds of an alleged improper payment of a facilitation fee of Rs 4.25 billion from MSM.

The fourth edition of the IPL kicks off on 8 April when reigning champions Chennai Super Kings host the Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai.
