MUMBAI: In a bid to do something different from the usual as a year-ender, Radio One is giving its Mumbai listeners the opportunity to introspect on those Indians who touched and impressed them the most in the year gone by. Through the 94.3 Radio One Indian of the Year' initiative, the network is asking its listeners to vote for Indians who inspired them with their achievements and sheer strength of character across 2010.
The activity -- which the network believes will build as much patriotic fervour as the sense of positive nostalgia it will fill its listeners with -- is well underway through two voting options for listeners. One: a special sms (IOY<space>NAME) that listeners have to send to 53650, and two, through phone calls every day between 7 and 11 am, wherein they speak with Music Jockey Hrishikesh Kannan, popularly known as Hrishi.K and share their views about their favourite Indian hero or heroine along with why they are voting for the particular personality.
After accumulating all votes and opinions the Radio One Indian of the Year will be crowned with a studio interview of the personality towards the end of the first week of January.
Unlike other polls where people vote for their favourite personalities, this one actually gives the voter a platform to say out loud why he or she thinks it's worth voting for a particular personality,... Rishi Kishnani, Mumbai Programming Head of Radio One, told RadioAndMusic.com, adding, There is also a fun element woven in with our Music Jockey Hrishi K egging on each listener by playing the devil's advocate to get the best out of him or her. Ultimately, Hrishi K facilitates the exchange with the ultimate aim of achieving a feel-good and meaningful experience on-air....
Explaining the thinking behind the activity, Kishnani says, Ours is a society increasingly starved of heroes and heroines, and in this scenario, we though it would be best to give our listeners a canvas to pick and choose their favourite Indian in 2010.
See, we are acting as a catalyst here, egging listeners on to celebrate some of the best achievements of Indians over last year, and reward the people responsible for them. For instance,... he says, counting off some of the Indians who have captured a big part of India's collective imagination, Did Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, or Bihar cm Nitish Kumar inspire you in the field of politics this year? Did world wrestling champ Sushil Kumar or the fiery badminton champion Saina Nehwal fill you with pride with their exploits in the sporting sphere? Does Kumaramangalam Birla's no-nonsense approach, or do Sunil Bharti Mittal's acquisitions get you going? Does the Indian in you bask in Aamir Khan's perfectionist glory or in Rajnikanth's sheer blockbuster value? And what did you feel when the `Mumbai Citizens Group exposed the Adarsh Housing Scam through their RTIs, or when the Election Commission of India notched up a peaceful poll in Bihar with not a single killing reported?...
Hrishi.K told RadioAndMusic.com, We at Radio One wanted to start the year 2011 with positivity and a strong dose of nationalistic pride,... says Music Jockey Hrishi K, and our programming team created Indian Of The Year with that in mind. The response so far has been excellent, and I am sure we will feature a truly deserving hero or heroine for India later this week, most probably on the 5th of January between 7 and 11 am....
Hrishi. K added that the frontrunners so far, in no particular order, are: Sania Nehwal, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the Mumbai Citizens' Group (which exposed the Adarsh scam).
