India, China account for 35 per cent of active mobile users: report

MUMBAI: Two of the world’s biggest handset markets, India and China account for 35 per cent of the world’s 4.1 billion active mobile users, according to the Ericsson Traffic and Market Data Report.

The report stated that the global mobile penetration has significantly increased to 85 per cent with the estimated 180 million net additions in Q4 (last quarter) of 2011 and mobile subscriptions now total to around six billion. The study mentions that the actual number of subscribers is about 4.1 billion, as many users have numerous subscriptions.

Mobile subscriptions have witnessed a growth of around 13 per cent year-on-year and three per cent quarter-on-quarter, equaling the number of mobile subscriptions to around 60 per cent of the world’s population. The report also states that global mobile broadband subscriptions increased around 60 per cent year-on-year and have reached close to the one billion mark.

GSMA mobile services ruled the global industry with 75 per cent market share, while CDMA and HSPA (3G) accounted for 15 per cent of the total market share.

According to the report, there is a strong momentum for smartphone uptake in all regions as around 30 per cent of the handsets sold in 2011 belonged to the smartphone category as compared to the 20 per cent smartphones sold in 2010.

However statistics state that only around 10 per cent of the worldwide installed base of subscriptions use smartphones, leaving room for further uptake.
