Independent music scene is back on TV: Raghu Dixit

MUMBAI:  Since last year the music scenario of the country has undergone a huge change due to the increasing popularity of indie-pop music on digital space. The indie-music content has succeeded in acquiring large eyeballs which in turn has attracted several television channels to cash on the growing demand of musical content.

The channels which were heavily depended on drama series and reality shows are slowly and steadily experimenting with innovative music series like Dewarist, TGIRF, Coke Studio, Unplugged, Soundtrippin etc, further opening a whole new platform for independent artiste.

Indie-folk artiste Raghu Dixit who has created quite a niche mark for himself in an independent music scenario and has been featured on almost every indie-music shows including Dewarist, Coke studio and TGIRF is quiet content with the increasing focus on independent music which had been underground for many years.

Commenting on the increasing demand for musical content on television channels, Dixit said, “Finally after seven to eight years television is back into the independent scene, the scene which cannot be ignored any more as it has grown and evolved into the humungous stage and in coming years it will be a force to reckon within the music industry. It is a great news for the musicians like me who are heavily depended on the internet for promoting their own music. The television coverage on general entertainment channel has introduced us completely to the new audiences and masses of the music lovers who have stuck to the music channel alone. Now due to this shift we are actually targeting the audiences who actually like such kinds of music show. It’s a great tool for the indie artiste to get along with the new audiences.”

Each shows have carved out their own niche, while TV series  like Dewarist, Coke Studio and Unplugged highlighted artistes talent by mainly focusing on the unique collaboration and one-of-its kind compositions, Thank God Its Rock on Friday (TGIRF) has taken quiet an off the road approach by actually introducing the artistes to its viewers. The content of music theme show TGIRF which is quiet popular in west is a first of its kind initiative in India. The show gives audiences an opportunity to take a look at the journeys of their favorite artists and will reintroduce the genre of indie rock to the urban youth.

Dixit stated, “TGIRF is quiet important for independent artistes like me. It’s a Rockumentary about the artistes focusing entirely on independent music not just song but into the life of artiste, talking about their journey, personal life and how they have achieved the success, their efforts behind the success. It is an encyclopedia not only about the show but also behind the scenes fun fact. Whereas, Dewarist was a collaborative show which focused how two cultures come together and become one through the collaboration of two artistes from different background. It had a very little scope to showcase the music of an individual artiste as it was more into collaborative form and the main focus was to showcase how music has no barriers.  On other side Coke Studio was completely the producers based show than the artistes based series.”

TGIRF, a property of ArtistAloud.com is launched by international music channel Big CBS Spark and is a perfect example of digitally sourced television shows. ArtistAloud.com is a full-fledged distribution platform that not only avails content of various artists but also promotes artists through various concepts that include online and offline participation.
