Iggy Azalea, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams top AMA 2014 nominations

MUMBAI: On Monday, 13 October, the nominations for this year's American Music Awards were announced. 'Bounce' singer Iggy Azalea tops with six nominations, followed by 'All of Me' singer John Legend, 'Teenage Dream' singer Katy Perry and 'Happy' singer Pharrell Williams with five nominations and 'Royals' singer Lorde with four nominations.

Thrice nominated are Beyoncé, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic and One Direction with Bastille, Drake, Luke Bryan and Sam Smith nominated twice.

According to a statement earlier released, the Artist of the Year category increases from 5 to 10 nominees in 2014 which includes Iggy Azalea, Beyoncé, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Lorde, One Direction, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams. These ten nominees will be further shortened to five based on the votes received through 13 November and through the aggregate of the total votes received throughout the entire voting period, the winner will be determined.

Increasing from three to five nominees in 2014 is also the Single of The Year category whose nominees include 'Fancy' by Iggy Azalea Featuring Charli XCX, 'All of Me' by John Legend, 'Rude' by MAGIC!, 'Dark Horse' by Katy Perry Featuring Juicy J and 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams.

The other award categories include recognition to artistes from various genres viz., Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative Rock, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Contemporary Inspirational, Electronic Dance Music, along with Top Soundtrack, New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl's, Artist of the Year and Single of the Year.

The American Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions as reflected in Billboard Magazine and on Billboard.com, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, streaming and social activity. Nielson Entertainment and Next Big Sound are Billboard's data partners, who along with Billboard track these measurements.

Listeners determine the American Music Award winners by voting. Beginning on 13 October, for all categories except New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl's, fans can only vote once a day at the Coca-Cola AMA voting site, AMAvote.com, and via Twitter by including the nominee's name, category name and #AMAs within a tweet.

The American Music Awards will broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, 23 November on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) network.
