MUMBAI: Popularly known as the face of Radio One, RAPA award winner Hrishikesh Kannan aka Hrishi K is back on the international radio station after a hiatus of more than a year.
Breaking away from the niche created by other radio broadcasters, Radio One transformed itself into an international radio station with novel programmes and campaigns in Mumbai and Delhi. “Radio One is like home to me. I’ve been here forever and done a whole variety of slots from breakfast to weekend. It’s wonderful to be back in a whole new dimension and avatar. I haven’t done English radio in 10 years. It’s a huge challenge for me and a lot of fun,” he expressed.
When quizzed about his comeback the RJ claimed, “I reached a point where the question was, what now from here? When you’ve done radio (hindi play) for over a decade, you need to push the envelope and take it to the next level. And this is the next level.”
With a career as voice-over artiste, commentator and anchor, Hrishi K is currently hosting the breakfast show ‘Good Morning Mumbai’ from 7am-12pm. Focusing on the city from an international perspective, the week day show discusses the global vibe of the city and sports. Targeting the working professionals, the show features music from the 70-90’s era. “It’s a magical experience because we know we are not a part of the rat race anymore. We can afford to be different and implement different things through this new format. I don’t need a bollywood actress to promote my show; I can get a good theatre artiste, lawyer or CEO of a company who’s talking sense,” he stated.
While the quirky RJ has returned to radio, he is still juggling various hats and lends his voice for shows like ‘Supernova 50’ and ‘Times Hotlist’. During his break from the radio station, Kannan lent his voice for many other reality shows like ‘Khatron ke Khiladi’, ‘Khan Sisters’, ‘Superstars Superlive’, ‘Stardum,‘Zabardus’, ‘Bollywood Confidential’ and ‘Bollyfood’. “I decided to take a break and try to do a voice-over career full time as I wanted to do something new and challenge myself.
With actors preferring to dub their own scenes and with the progress of location sound and sync sound, the art of voice-overs and dubbing is not receiving its due today. There was a time when I was the default voice of Amitabh Bachchan. When he was busy or out of town on a shoot and an ad read up required his voice, they would call me. But now he does all his dubbing himself,” he concludes.
Apart from voice-overs, Kannan is also managing director of radio solutions company ‘Radiohead’. He is involved in the creation of radio commercial spots, advertisements, jingles and programmes. The company also manages mobile and online sports broadcast production and had produced exclusive live cricket commentary for IPL 2009.
