Galaxy S4 sets record sales of 10 million in a month

MUMBAI: Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S4 smartphone has got off to a flying start with a record breaking 10 million units shipped in a month.

The biggest competitor to the Apple iPhone, is already selling in 60 countries and Korean conglomerate Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker, plans to expand sales to 327 carriers in 155 countries by next month.

Solid sales have come even as supply issues have snarled the U.S. rollout through some carriers, reports have said.

Analysts expect strong sales of the fourth version of the Galaxy, which has propelled Samsung to the top of the $225 billion smartphone market since its debut in 2010.

The S4’s achievement tops not only its Galaxy predecessors but Anroid smartphone sales. The Samsung Galaxy S3 took almost two months to reach the 10 million figure. The Samsung Galaxy S2 took almost five months to reach the same number of sales while the very first Samsung Galaxy S took much longer as seven months, report said.

The Galaxy S4’s stunning sales figures could be attributed to Samsung’s strategy of releasing the phone simultaneously in multiple markets. While phones are often announced globally, availability in emerging markets often takes much longer as these markets are at times neglected. However, Samsung’s reach and marketing in every country ensured the phone was well in the news and in eye of the common man, be it UK, USA or India.

Despite mixed reviews of the S4 by gadget experts, Samsung is benefiting from heavy marketing as it bids to gain market share in the absence of new competing models from Apple.

Samsung pulled all stops with the marketing of Samsung Galaxy S4. While most of the in-your-face, brash advertising techniques were looked down on by the public, the advertising served its purpose. While Samsung went on to change the look of the Sydney Opera House in Australia for their launch, they tampered with the pop YouTube sensation Psy’s Gangnam Style in India curtsy actor Ranveer Singh’s ‘Samsung Style’ rendition.

Samsung won a record 33 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter, and JP Morgan analysts expect its operating profit to top Apple's this quarter for the first time in years.
