Fest to mark Gangubai Hangal's 98th birth anniversary

MUMBAI: A three-day Indian classical music and folk dance festival will be organised from 5 March to mark the 98th birth anniversary of late legendary vocalist Gangubai Hangal.

The festival, to be organised by Dr Gangubai Hangal Music Foundation and Hubli Art Circle, would be held at the house where she was born and which is now converted into a museum at Shukrawarpeth, Dharwad, according to media reports.

Hangal passed away in July 2009.

An award presentation in memory of late Krishna Hangal, daughter of Gangubai would be organised on Friday. Ratnamala Prakash of Bangalore and Sanjay Abhyankar of Pune will be the recepients of the award - Rs 10,000 cash award along with a citation each, followed by a concert by the awardees.

The festival would also see a vocal jugalbandi by Shashikala Korlahalli and Sujata Kammar. A concert would also be organised dedicated to late Hayavadana Joshi.

Prabhakar Kore, Rajya Sabha member, will inaugurate the festival in which about 50,000 music lovers from all over the state are expected to participate, the reports add.
