Event Review : Tabeer - a dream performance

Often at music launches, it happens that except 'good music', one gets the best of everything – food, wine, brilliant atmosphere, stunning women and of course, those unavoidable long-short speeches. I waited for a good 15 minutes at the 'Tabeer' music launch. On the 16th minute (no, my watch was not set on a countdown, just a guess) I saw the guitarist and the bass player tune their respective instruments – it was like a ray of hope. Within moments, all the musicians were up on stage and what happened after that was, in one word – 'mesmerizing'. Now, I feel – well, that was worth the wait!

Shafqat performed a mix of some of his old and new songs for the launch. The songs which got maximum applause were the soulful renditions of Mora Saiyyan, Yeh Hosla and Mitwa from his previous projects and Rang le, Kairyaan De Naal and an extended version of Dum Ali Ali Dum. I discovered one more thing, I didn't know that Shafqat had a good sense of humor – towards the end of the concert while he was introducing his musicians; pointing at his rather 'young' Dholak player, he said, "Aur woh chotti si cheez dikh rahi hain aapko?" the entire hall burst into some hearty laughter. But, on a serious note, all the musicians displayed fantastic command over their respective instruments. I can say that, Shafqat's music and performance is the kind which urges the audience to let themselves loose. On many occasions, I was tempted to get out of my seat and break into an impromptu sing-dance session – maybe, next time!

A man of few words, Shafqat Amanat Ali speaks sporadically, or say, lets his song talk for him. The 'Rock Star Ustad' kept everybody hooked with his vocal magic throughout the concert. Audiences belonging to both young and old generations were present at the launch and the fact that he got people from every generation captivated, is a testimony to his soulful music. I had got the opportunity to hear some of 'Tabeer's songs before, and I can say that be it 'live' or on record, the man is too good to be true. I'd say, music lovers and especially, Shafqat's fans should definitely watch him perform live – May your dreams be fulfilled, Tabeer....
