Entrepreneur singer gets Rafi award for encouraging new singers

CHANDIGARH: Entrepreneur and singer B D Sharma received the Annual Rafi Memorial Award 2009 here for his outstanding contribution in keeping alive the memory of legendary singer Mohammed Rafi through music competitions for the last 24 years.

The award was presented at a function in Chandigarh presided over by Punjab finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, and the chief guest on the occasion was actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha.

The Award was instituted by Yaadgaar-e-Rafi Society, New Delhi, in 1983 and was presented by its founder chairman Amarjit Singh Kohli. The function was organised by the Yaadgar-e-Rafi Society... of Chandigarh formed in 1985 by Sharma. Yaadgar-e-Rafi Society has been organising music competitions in New Delhi since 1983 and many of its winners are today playback singers, claims the society.

Badal lamented the absence of good Urdu poetry in the lyrics of film music today and said memorable, timeless and immortal songs can come out of only good lyrics. He also spoke about music director Roshan, initially known as Roshan Lal Nagrath, who had composed many memorable songs sung by Rafi like Jo vada kiya who nibhana padega....

Sinha said Rafi was a very upright man. He exhorted the politicians to emulate the ethics followed by Rafi who never charged fees from upcoming producers who could not afford it. The function was followed by a musical programme of Rafi's songs by amateur singers who were also given prizes for their performance.
