Dr Gangubai Hangal awarded lifetime achievement award

MUMBAI: An international seminar was organised on the theme of 'Reconsidering Fundamental Issues in Indian Art Music by ITC- Sangeet Research Academy in collaboration with the Music Forum and the NCPA in Mumbai on Saturday.

Several noted speakers and musicians like Dr Ashok Ranade, Prof Frans De Ruiter (University of Amsterdam), Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma and Pt Suresh Talwalkar were present on the occasion and spoke on issues like the Nature and function of music, Rasa theory, Time Theory, Tabla Garana, Laghu Kaal Unit of Laya, Relevance and usefulness of 'Dasha Praana in today's Hindustani music.

Noted Kirana Gharana singer Dr Gangubai Hangal was declared as the recipient of the lifetime achievement award instituted by the Consulate General of Kingdom of Netherlands. Dr Gangubai Hangal has the rare distinction of having sung for Mahatama Gandhi and was also one of the regular broadcasters on All India Radio since 1933. Besides, she was the only female singer then since the Kirana Gharana was majorly male dominated. The organization also felicitated musicians, musicologists and promising artistes in the field of Indian Classical Music. Due to health reasons, 96 -year-old Hangal could not make it to the ceremony.

The event was supported by Consulate General of the Kingdom of Netherlands and Department of Musicology, Universoty of Amsterdam and NCPA.
